Assignment

In week 03, let's build Jungle Temple Ruins. Popular games like Uncharted and Crystal Dynamics Tomb Raider franchise should be really great references for you. Week 3's focus is creating a third-person blockout level that highlights OPEN spaces but still within a linear setting. So, Semi-Open levels. These aren’t open world spaces, but they open up and bottleneck players back to their goals.

  • Get more familiar building Semi - LINEAR spaces (Mixing Open and Linear)

  • Think about Environmental Storytelling

  • Imagine a story or gameplay taking place

  • Blocking out a simple level to move around in

  • Continue getting familiar with Blueprint Character (ALS V4)

  • Make your own PureRef Reference Board

“Please Include

  • Proper start position facing towards the level

  • Mix linear spaces like week 02, but this time open some of the spaces to feel much larger.

  • Include at least one Interior and one exterior space

  • Try identifying a main path or golden path of the level

  • Add at least one area that moves away from the main path

  • Boundaries to block the player in (or death fall trigger in case I fall)

The 3rd week´s assignment was all about Tomb Raider and Uncharted references. So after gathering a lot of references from both franchises, I started to watch some Emilia Schatz interviews, talks, etc.
Emilia is one of the biggest references in Level and Game Design, she worked in some tiny indie games like, Uncharted 3: Drake´s Deception, Uncharted 4: A Thief´s End, The Last of Us, Last of Us: Left Behind and, The Last of Us Part 2. =D.

And of course, having a task of the week where the whole setting is in a rainforest gets anyone interested. Since the Mayans, Aztecs, Incas, and other peoples are of immense wealth and curiosity, I delved into book research again.

The level of focus is being used to create something bigger, so I preferred not to leave a link to the executable for people to play. As soon as it's ready, I'll put a link in place of this message.

During the third week, I embarked on my journey into the world of Blueprints. Initially, I found it easy to pick up the basics through YouTube tutorials, but I soon realized that Blueprints could be both a powerful ally and a potential source of frustration. While they can significantly streamline development, they also have the potential to introduce complex bugs that can be difficult to track down. Recognizing the need for a deeper understanding, I decided to invest in Udemy courses to thoroughly master this feature and harness its full potential.

Here is a download link so you can try it.
Have fun.
